📢 Speaking up against retail crime and ASB in the House of Lords

Baroness Ayesha Hazarika, Brixton resident and member of ACTION on ASB, delivered a passionate speech in the House of Lords on 5 Dec, highlighting the devastating impact of retail crime on rising levels of anti-social behaviour. Drawing on stories from Brixton, she called for stronger policing, joined-up solutions, leadership, and safer streets.

No one would like to imagine a situation where they were forced to beg. Unfortunately in Brixton we see some of those who are in need turning to aggression and intimidation. Often those targeted are the most vulnerable. Have you experienced this behaviour? Where are the hotspots? Share your comments below. Whilst there are few public conveniences in Brixton, there are many businesses, coffee shops and pubs that kindly offer toilets to those in need. Our high street and market-based businesses are experiencing a daily struggle with regular occurrences of shoplifting and on-going intimidation of staff. Shoplifting can increase the costs beared by us all and leads to many large shops requiring private security and some smaller shops to close.
