We attended the Lambeth’s Night Time Economy Strategy

Last week, ACTION on ASB! attended the launch of Lambeth’s Night Time Economy Strategy 2025–2030, which sets out how the borough plans to manage and support activity, safety and public space between 6pm and 6am.

What is Lambeth’s Night Time Economy Strategy?

Lambeth’s Night Time Economy Strategy is the borough’s first dedicated framework for how evenings and nights (6pm–6am) should function for residents, workers, businesses and visitors. It defines the night time economy broadly, extending beyond nightlife to include culture, transport, healthcare, public services, public space and local high streets.

The strategy is structured around four borough-wide priorities:

  • supporting night-time businesses
  • growing culture and the visitor economy
  • improving spaces and places after dark
  • promoting inclusivity, wellbeing and safety

Throughout, the strategy emphasises partnership working between the council, communities, Business Improvement Districts, venues, police, transport and health services, and is framed around Lambeth’s wider commitment to equity and justice. It highlights the role of coordinated management, public realm design and activation, alongside enforcement and regulation, in shaping how safe and welcoming places feel at night.

What it says about Brixton and tackling ASB

The strategy recognises Brixton’s significant role as a major cultural and night-time destination and identifies the challenges experienced after dark. These include concerns around lighting, crowding, vacant shopfronts, visible drug and alcohol use, and perceptions of safety.

Alongside ongoing policing, the strategy links night-time safety and ASB to how streets and public spaces in Brixton are designed, used and managed. It sets out actions focused on better coordination between the @lambeth_council , @BrixtonBid , venues and policing teams, alongside practical measures such as providing access to toilets, bringing long-term vacant units back into use, and more active, well-managed public spaces like Windrush Square, alongside ongoing policing..

What we’ll be watching closely

As the strategy moves into delivery, Action on ASB! will be watching how these commitments translate into on-the-ground change in Brixton, particularly around public space management, coordination between agencies, and environmental improvements and activation. The shared goal is sustained reductions in ASB and improved confidence for residents after dark.
